Federated's claims representatives have the opportunity to truly demonstrate Federated's Value Difference^® to clients through exceptional claims service in a time of need. Claims representatives work closely with clients, physicians, attorneys, contractors, auto body repair operations, and others. They are trained to be prompt, fair, and courteous in handling claims.

Claims representatives need knowledge and skills in these areas:

• Coverage – clear understanding of coverage that applies to specific loss situations and the ability to explain coverage to clients
• Investigation – innovation and prompt attention to determine coverage, facts, damages, and recovery possibilities
• Evaluation – fairness and integrity based on coverage, liability, damages, and medical necessity, according to state laws and jurisdictions
• Negotiation – ethics and integrity, and detailed knowledge of issues
• Resolution – objectivity and sensitivity to settle, deny, defend, compromise, or recover, based on the facts and coverage that apply

Successful claims professionals:

• Are tactful and patient
• Are strong communicators and have the ability to build effective working relationships
• Have strong analytical and decision-making skills
• Are good priority managers
• Understand insurance policies, laws, medical outcomes, and property repair issues
• Understand our clients' viewpoints and the essentials of their business operations

Federated helps provide knowledge and experience for new claims representatives through classroom work, discussion of policies and procedures, and on-the-job training. Claims representatives are encouraged to continue self-development through self-study courses and achieving professional designations such as Associate in Claims (AIC) and Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU). Federated pays exam fees and awards cash bonuses for completion of most insurance-related courses. Federated employees also have Company support for individual self-development activities.
